Francois Caussin Violin Nechateau, France 1860-SOLD
Francois Caussin Violin
Nechateau, France
Year: circa 1860
4/4
This handsome French violin has a two-piece book matched maple back displaying fine lateral flaming with medium deep optics. The ribs and scroll match, and the scroll is nicely and deeply carved. The top is very finely grained spruce. The varnish is a light golden brown color that has darkened with age, and is evenly applied. Antiquing is from genuine wear and use. The top has a number of “bow dings” between the C bouts, and some hand wear on the upper treble side bout. The back has an overall thinning of the varnish color, which allows the beauty of the wood to show, and two surface scars from use. The violin is modeled on a Amati design, with medium high arching on the top and back. The edgework is very fine. Medium dark boxwood pegs, chinrest, and tailpiece compliment the violin nicely. A handsome violin with a lot of character.
